  • Lands on injured reserve

    The Bills placed Buechele (neck) on injured reserve Tuesday.

    Analysis: Buechele suffered a significant neck injury during Buffalo's preseason opener against the Bears. Unless he can reach an injury settlement with the team, Buechele will have to spend the entire 2024 campaign on IR with the Bills.

  • Sustains neck injury vs. Chicago

    Head coach Sean McDermott told reporters Monday that Buechele will be out for an extended amount of time after sustaining a neck injury in Saturday's 33-6 preseason loss to the Bears, Jay Skurski of The Buffalo News reports.

    Analysis: Buechele took over under center in the second half of Saturday's contest after Josh Allen and Mitch Trubisky handled snaps in the first half. Buechele finished the contest completing six of 10 passes for 53 yards and one interception while adding 22 rushing yards on three carries. The Bills brought in Ben DiNucci to take snaps with the second- and third-team offenses while Buechele is sidelined.

    Buechele was added to the Bills' practice squad Wednesday.

    Analysis: Buechele spent his first two seasons on the Chiefs' practice squad after going undrafted in 2021. He never actually suited up for a game during his stint in KC and will now look for a fresh start in Buffalo. He finished his five-year collegiate career with 11,660 yards and 87 touchdowns to go along with 478 rushing yards and eight touchdowns on the ground for both Texas and SMU.

    Buechele was waived by the Chiefs on Tuesday.

    Analysis: Blaine Gabbert was always the likely backup to Patrick Mahomes under center, so this is a relatively unsurprising move by the Chiefs. The 25-year-old has not suited up for an NFL game during his tenure in the league, but he did spend the majority of the 2021 season on Kansas City's practice squad.     Analysis: Patrick Mahomes and Chad Henne are both healthy, so on the surface this comes as a surprising move. However, Yates reports that the Cardinals -- who currently have injuries to Kyler Murray (ankle) and Colt McCoy (pectoral) -- attempted to sign Buechele to their active roster, so the Chiefs are merely protecting their practice squad quarterback.
