Not on injury report
Browning (ribs) was absent from the Bengals' injury report Wednesday.
Analysis: Browning suffered a rib injury in the Bengals' preseason opener against the Buccaneers, which caused him to miss the final two exhibition games. Now healthy, he'll be available to serve as Cincinnati's backup behind Joe Burrow for the regular-season opener against New England on Sunday.

Out with rib injury
Browning (ribs) won't play in Saturday's preseason game against Chicago, Paul Dehner Jr. of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: Browning played in the preseason opener but threw for only 52 yards on 18 pass attempts, and he then missed practice this week with a rib injury sustained during the game. Coach Zac Taylor said he expects the QB to "miss some time" but didn't go into further detail.

Nursing rib injury
Browning did not participate at practice Tuesday due to a rib injury he sustained during Saturday's preseason game versus the Buccaneers, Ben Baby of ESPN reports.
Analysis: The exact severity of the issue is unclear, but Coach Zac Taylor said Tuesday that Browning would "miss some time." In his stead, Logan Woodside may see more opportunities to impress during drills.

Struggles in preseason opener
Browning and the Bengals' second-team offense struggled in the preseason opener against the Bucs. Browning ended up completing 10 passes on 18 attempts for only 52 yards and an interception.
Analysis: Browning helmed seven drives against the Bucs, with only one lasting more than three plays, and that one ended in a missed field goal. It's only one preseason game, but Browning did not build off of last season's better-than-expected performance.

Signed through 2025
Browning signed a two-year contract with the Bengals on Tuesday.
Analysis: Undrafted back in 2019, the QB spent two years on Minnesota's practice squad and then two seasons on Cincinnati's. Browning finally got his shot in 2023, winning the No. 2 QB job for the Bengals and eventually replacing an injured Joe Burrow (wrist) for the final seven and a half games of the season. Browning played surprisingly well down the stretch, with 15 total TDs (three rushing) and seven turnovers (all INTs) while leading all qualified passers in completion percentage (70.4) and ranking…read more

Tendered by Cincinnati
The Bengals tendered an offer Wednesday to Browning, an exclusive rights free agent.
Analysis: Undrafted out of Washington in 2019, Browning made the first nine appearances of his NFL career last season, starting seven games following Joe Burrow's season-ending injury. Browning had the Bengals in playoff contention right up until the end of the season and finished with a league-best 70.4 percent completion rate for 1,936 yards, 12 touchdowns and seven interceptions while adding 127 yards and three scores on the ground. He's the favorite to open 2024 as Burrow's top backup.

Throws three TDs in Week 18 win
Browning completed 18 of 24 passes for 156 yards, three touchdowns and one interception in Sunday's 31-14 win over the Browns. He added 18 yards on two rushing attempts.
Analysis: Browning was picked off on Cincinnati's first possession but led touchdown drives on the next three. That stretch included a six-yard touchdown pass to Joe Mixon and a three-yard touchdown pass to Andrei Iosivas, as well as a Mixon rushing touchdown. Browning added a seven-yard touchdown pass to Iosivas in the third quarter. After Joe Burrow suffered a season-ending wrist injury in Week 11, Browning threw for 1,936 yards with a 12:7 TD:INT and three rushing touchdowns in seven starts and one…read more

Held in check in Week 17 loss
Browning completed 19 of 33 passes for 197 yards, one touchdown and zero interceptions in Sunday's 25-17 loss to the Chiefs. He added seven rushes for 32 yards and an additional score.
Analysis: Browning got the Bengals' offense off to a hot start, as the team recorded 17 points through their first three possessions. In that span, he threw a seven-yard touchdown to Joe Mixon and also bowled through several defenders on a one-yard rush into the end zone. However, the team failed to score again, and Browning's stat line suffered. He's played admirably in relief of Joe Burrow (wrist) since Week 11, though he could be in a tough spot in a Week 18 matchup against the Browns with both…read more

Three interceptions in Week 16 loss
Browning completed 28 of 42 passes for 335 yards, one touchdown and three interceptions in Saturday's 34-11 loss to the Steelers. He also threw a two-point conversion and rushed once for no gain.
Analysis: Browning had a few key errors that contributed to Cincinnati's 24-0 halftime deficit. He threw a ball up for grabs for an interception in Pittsburgh's end zone in the first quarter, then tossed another interception in the second quarter before adding an incompletion on fourth-and-1 from Pittsburgh's five-yard line just before the two-minute warning in the first half. Big second half in 324-yard effort
Browning completed 29 of 42 pass attempts for 324 yards, two touchdowns and one interception in the 27-24 overtime win against the Vikings on Saturday.
Analysis: Browning mostly struggled in the first half, though he narrowly missed two big throws -- one to Charlie Jones and one to Tee Higgins -- and he would have had a much bigger game if either of those targets had landed. Browning would go on to hit Higgins for two touchdown strikes in the second half, which is an encouraging sign given that Browning had otherwise shown hints of growing dependent on YAC yardage from his running backs and tight ends. The problem is that Ja'Marr Chase left the game…read more

Another stellar performance Sunday
Browning completed 18 of 24 passes for 275 yards with two touchdowns and one interception and added three rushes for seven yards and another score in the Bengals' 34-14 win over the Colts on Sunday.
Analysis: Browning went a long way toward proving his breakout Monday night Week 13 performance against the Jaguars was no fluke, displaying outstanding efficiency while averaging an impressive 11.5 yards per attempt. Rookie running back Chase Brown lent Browning a big early hand by taking a short pass 54 yards for a touchdown in the first quarter, and the fourth-year signal-caller connected with Tanner Hudson for an 11-yard scoring strike in the third quarter, a play Browning followed up with a one-yard…read more

Elite numbers in primetime upset
Browning completed 32 of 37 passes for 354 yards with one touchdown and no interceptions in the Bengals' 34-31 overtime win over the Jaguars on Monday night. He also rushed twice for 22 yards and another score and brought in his only target for minus-7 yards.
Analysis: Browning was near perfect in a performance no one could have seen coming, with the fourth-year pro averaging 9.6 yards per attempt and connecting with eight different targets on the night. His one touchdown toss, a 76-yard pass to Ja'Marr Chase down the left sideline early in the third quarter, broke a 14-14 tie at the time, and the emerging signal-caller added a one-yard rushing touchdown early in the fourth before eventually calmly leading a game-winning 12-play drive in overtime. Mediocre in first career start
Browning completed 19 of 26 passes for 227 yards, one touchdown and one interception in Sunday's 16-10 loss to the Steelers. He added three rushes for nine yards.
Analysis: Browning drew his first career start due to the absence of Joe Burrow (wrist) and kept the Bengals in the game for a tough divisional matchup. His lone touchdown came early in the second quarter on an 11-yard pass to Drew Sample. While Browning certainly won't move the Cincinnati offense in a comparable way to Burrow, he did show enough competence that Cincinnati should remain competitive, which is good news for the likes of Ja'Marr Chase and Tee Higgins (hamstring).

Starter with Burrow out for year
Browning will be Cincinnati's starting quarterback moving forward, as Joe Burrow (wrist) is in line to miss the rest of the season, Paul Dehner Jr. of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: Burrow went for an MRI on Friday after leaving Thursday's 34-20 loss to the Ravens in the first half. The MRI revealed a torn ligament in the star quarterback's right wrist. Browning came into Thursday's game with just one career pass attempt in the NFL, and he went on to complete eight of 14 passes for 68 yards with one touchdown and no interceptions while rushing four times for 40 yards after replacing the injured Burrow. Serviceable in emergency duty
Browning entered the Bengals' 34-20 loss to the Ravens on Thursday night with 2:02 remaining in the second quarter for an injured Joe Burrow (wrist) and completed eight of 14 passes for 68 yards with one touchdown and no interceptions while rushing four times for 40 yards.
Analysis: Browning was able to lead the Bengals on a 10-play, 67-yard drive that culminated in a field goal to open the second half, but the next three Cincinnati possessions netted minus-2 yards on nine plays. Browning was subsequently able to lead an eight-play, 75-yard match in garbage time that he capped off with a two-yard touchdown toss to Ja'Marr Chase with 1:08 remaining, and he'd be in line to fill in for Burrow again in a Week 12 home divisional clash versus the Steelers on Sunday, Nov. 26 if…read more

Gets No. 2 QB job
Browning is the Bengals' second-string quarterback following the release of Trevor Siemian on Tuesday, Jay Morrison of PFN reports.
Analysis: Siemian's release confirms that Browning won the summer battle to back up Joe Burrow, who remains uncertain for Week 1 after suffering a calf injury in late July. The Bengals may still take a look at other options for the backup role, especially if they aren't confident in Burrow making it back for Week 1 at Cleveland. The 27-year-old Browning has spent time with Minnesota and Cincinnati since going undrafted back in 2019, but he's still seeking his first regular-season appearance after years…read more

Makes bid for No. 2 QB spot
Browning completed each of his six passes for 42 yards and a touchdown in Saturday's 21-19 preseason loss to the Commanders.
Analysis: Browning got the start and led the Bengals to seven points on two drives before turning things over to Trevor Siemian, who produced six points on five drives. One of the two will be named the No. 2 QB to start the season, with the role taking on added importance in light of Joe Burrow's continued recovery from a calf injury suffered in late July.

Unlikely to start Friday
Browning is expected to play the entire second half of Friday's preseason game against Atlanta, Paul Dehner Jr. of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: Browning started the Bengals' preseason opener against the Packers and played the entire first half, while Trevor Siemian handled the second half. The two quarterbacks are expected to reverse roles for Cincinnati's second exhibition as they continue to compete for the top backup spot behind Joe Burrow, who is currently sidelined with a calf injury but will likely be available for the regular season.

Sticks with Cincinnati
The Bengals signed Browning to a reserve/future contract Tuesday.
Analysis: Browning spent the entire 2022 campaign on the Bengals' practice squad and was elevated three times, but he's still looking to make his NFL debut. However, he's earned a future contract with Cincinnati for a second straight year and will get to stick around the organization during the offseason. If the Bengals don't re-sign Brandon Allen, Browning could have a chance to win the top backup spot behind Joe Burrow to start the 2023 season.

Back to practice squad
Browning reverted to the Bengals' practice squad Monday, per the NFL's transaction log.
Analysis: Browning was elevated for the final two weeks of the regular season and AFC Championship Game, but he simply operated as an emergency backup option behind Brandon Allen and Joe Burrow. The fourth-year quarterback originally joined the league as an undrafted free agent out of Washington and still is looking to make his NFL debut.

Shifts to active roster
Browning was elevated to the active roster Saturday, Andrew Gillis of The Cleveland Plain Dealer reports.

Shifts back to practice squad
Browning reverted to the Bengals' practice squad Monday, per the NFL's transaction log.
Analysis: Browning was elevated from the practice squad for the second week in a row to cap off the 2022 regular season. However, he still has yet to make his NFL debut, as the fourth-year quarterback was ultimately ruled inactive prior to Sunday's win over the Ravens. While it's unclear if he'll be brought up again, Browning should continue to serve as the Bengals' de facto No. 3 quarterback behind Joe Burrow and Brandon Allen during the team's upcoming playoff appearance against Baltimore on Sunday.

Browning was elevated from the Bengals' practice squad Saturday.

Winds up on Bengals' practice squad
The Bengals signed Browning to their practice squad Wednesday.
Analysis: Browning was waived Tuesday but went through waivers unclaimed, allowing the Bengals to add him to their practice squad. The 26-year-old quarterback likely won't be elevated to the 53-man roster unless Joe Burrow (appendix) gets hurt, though the Bengals don't have a backup on the roster at the moment after cutting both Browning and Brandon Allen.

The Bengals waived Browning on Tuesday, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports.
Analysis: With Joe Burrow (appendix) sidelined, Browning spilt quarterback duties with Brandon Allen during the preseason, but as expected, Allen beat Browning out for the No. 2 spot on the depth chart. Browning's release suggests that Burrow should be 100 percent by Week 1, and it's also possible that the Bengals opt to sign Browning to their practice squad if he clears waivers.

Sees extended action Friday
Browning completed 13 of 24 passes for 190 yards and gained 14 rushing yards on four carries in Friday's preseason game against the Cardinals.
Analysis: Brandon Allen got the start for Cincinnati but was knocked out of the game with a concussion after just one series, leaving Browning to run the offense well into the fourth quarter. The 26-year-old held his own, although he didn't lead the Bengals on a scoring drive until late. Struggles again in preseason finale
Browning was just 2-of-8 passing for 41 yards in Friday's preseason loss at Kansas City.

Browning was 8-of-15 passing for 82 yards with no touchdowns or interceptions in Saturday's preseason loss to the Colts. Browning and Kellen Mond's lackluster performances led head coach Mike Zimmer to leave open the possibility of the team signing a veteran backup to Kirk Cousins, Chris Tomasson of the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports.
Analysis: Browning had drawn praise in camp, but he struggled in the first preseason game (including an ugly pick-six interception) and then followed with a lackluster effort. Kellen Mond also struggled, so the Vikings may not feel secure about their backup options to Kirk Cousins.
